L.G.R. was founded by Luca Gnecchi Ruscone, hence the name. Luca was born in Rome, Italy, in 1982 to an Italian family with very strong roots to Africa. Growing up he spent most of his childhood between Italy and Africa. His father lives in Kenya and his mother was born in Eritrea, where his grandfather had been living since the 1930’s. In fact, it was the latter who had begun importing sunglasses from Italy when he first moved there, and these were the very same ones that Luca had stumbled upon in 2005.
“Some years ago I was in Eritrea, Africa, wandering through my grandfather’s old warehouse of Italian imports, when I discovered a model of sunglasses from a time long forgotten. These beautiful designs, immediately evoked the romanticism of an era long gone by. The merging of two worlds; the adventure of Africa and the glamour of the Riviera. I returned to the original artisans and created a line of eyewear that captured this timeless elegance.”
L.G.R eyewear is entirely handmade in Italy by expert artisans, who build each frame from start to finish using traditional methods of production for a resistant and long lasting product. Due to the their composition of cellulose acetate they can bend to adapt shape without heating. Once assembled, the frames undergoes a tumbling process of beech and birch wood to prepare them for the final step, which is polishing by hand. With the blend of traditional Italian methods of craftsmanship, lens technology, and a history that dates back to colonial Africa, L.G.R has a created a genuine product where virtues from the past are transmitted into contemporary eyewear.
